THE WEST AUSTRALIAN – Freya Tingley was left gobsmacked following her first encounter with Hollywood movie icon Clint Eastwood.

But it wasn’t because the burgeoning Perth actress was starstruck.

Rather, the 19-year-old had been madly racking her brain after Eastwood told her that they’d met before – at Cottesloe Beach.

“I said ‘I’m sorry I don’t remember’, then he said ‘I’m just joking’,” Tingley laughed to AAA yesterday.

“I asked him how he knew about Cottesloe Beach and he said he has a friend in Perth who told him that’s where all the cool kids hang out.”

Jokes aside, Eastwood was very taken with Tingley, having chosen her to star in his next directional project, a film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical Jersey Boys.

“I auditioned for the casting director and my tape was sent off with two other girls to Clint Eastwood, and he was taking a look at the tapes and picked me,” Tingley said.

“I’m a big fan of the 70s for film. I feel like its a golden era of film and he’s such a big contributor of that era. So to be working for someone who is so renowned and respected is really exciting.”

Jersey Boys is the big screen adaptation of the Tony award-winning musical about the rise and fall of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The band, one of the best-selling musical groups of all time, was known for hits “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Grease” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”
Christopher Walken, Jeremy Luke, Vincent Piazza and Joey Russo are set to appear in the film.

HOLLYWOOD IMMERSIVE – Last week Lilly Dawson caught up with Australian actress Freya Tingley, who’s just landed the role of Francine Valli in Clint Eastwood’s new movie Jersey Boys. Freya starred in the Netflix series Hemlock Grove and the soon to be released action thriller Swelter opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme.

How did you feel about transitioning to live in the US and the auditioning process over there?
I was totally ready – I was eager and determined! My first significant role was Hemlock Grove and the audition process was pretty simple – I went in for an audition and a week later I got a call back. I went to the call back, my tape was sent to the network executives and then 2 weeks later I found out I booked the role! I had set a goal to book a role by my 18th birthday and I signed the contract on my birthday.

Do you still get nervous in auditions and if so what do you do to beat those nerves?
I have been nervous in the past and how I got rid of the nerves involves the mental assertion that ‘I am this character’! As long as I am that required character I have no reason to be nervous.

What was it like being on Fashion Police and who is your favourite designer?
It was a very brief shoot, I had a stylist help provide me with options. I love Ellie Saab, Marchesa and Jenny Packham for red carpet dresses – they are feminine and elegant with beautiful flowing chiffon! I love Isabel Marant, Sandro and Maje for casual street style. Its so important to dress well as an actor, it’s part of being the best version of yourself, and the level at which you present yourself to others represents the respect you show to others.

IF – When Freya Tingley auditioned for the part of Frankie Valli’s daughter Francine in the movie Jersey Boys, she sent in her audition by tape. She got the role but didn’t meet the director- Clint Eastwood- until her first day on the set in Los Angeles.

So was the 19-year-old, Perth-born actress, who moved to the US with her mother Coppelia early last year, feeling a tad nervous or overawed in first meeting the legendary director?

Not a bit. “I was really excited,” she told IF on the line from her home in LA. “Clint directed a lot of my favourite films in the 1970s and 80s, the golden era of Hollywood.”

Eastwood famously works fast and gives little direction to his actors, which is precisely how Freya found him. “He’s a very calm person,” she says. “He encourages his actors to do what they think is right for their characters.”
